Our HERstory
On September 26, 2020, Teresa Roberts approached Brenda Spurgon and Sharon Albert-Gates to inquire about the letters on their jackets at a “Get Out To Vote” event with the Divine Nine. Teresa was advised to read about Sigma on the SGRho website and share with them what she learned. Teresa had an in depth conversation with Brenda Spurgon about the need to bring a chapter to the Tupelo area for representation. Brenda convinced her that she was the ideal person to bring others into the fold of starting a chapter. Teresa spoke to the Basileus of Theta Iota Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Oxford, MS, as well as Eddie Love and the late Jacqueline Certion, who became her soror and mentor. Teresa decided to speak with like minded women and received positive feedback indicating they would love to become a Sigma Woman and later charter in Tupelo. A group of 10 women from the Lee County area crossed over into the land of Sigma on December 13, 2020, with the intention of staying 2-3 years for sisterhood development, training, and experience to later charter in Tupelo.
The Nu Omega Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on September 2, 2023, with NINETEEN NOETIC women, Brenda Spurgon, Charlie Cooper, Chevelle Champ, Deborah Sharp, Jacqueline Davis, Janette Fields, Laurel Johnson, Margaret Montgomery, Melissa Coleman-White, Carolyn Hoskins, Rosalin Johnson, Sharon Gates-Albert, Shanna Ford, Shirley Cooley, Teresa Roberts, Thelma McClenton, Valerie Fields, Valerie Hendrix, and Waydean Cooper Smith.
